Academics at Crested Butte Academy
Director of Academics: Dave McMurray
Crested Butte Academy opened its doors in 1993 as a winter-term tutorial program. In the Fall of 1994 the Academy launched its first full-year program with 40 full-time students and 15 winter-termers. This year, CBA has moved into a new building, a former ski lodge, and has an enrollment of about 80 full-time students. The Academy is expecting about 15 winter-termers.
Full Year Program:
Crested Butte Academy is a college preparatory high school serving children from Gunnison County and from around the U.S. and the world. We believe strongly in the Greek ideal of strong body/strong mind, that academic excellence and physical fitness go hand in hand. We offer a core curriculum presented through a flexible five term year, designed to prepare students for succeeding in college. Our primary emphasis is on written English, mathematics, the sciences, American and European historym and foreign languages. Class size at Crested Butte Academy ranges from one to 12 students per class, with an average of 3.8, affording every student the individualized attention that he or she needs. If a student falls behind or accelerates beyond the class he or she will be placed with an individual tutor.
A great deal of the education at the Academy occurs outside of the classroom. Our core education is supplemented by weaving of a continous program of current events to raise our students' knowledge of regional, national, and international issues.
