Jülich

Jülich was a duchy in the Holy Roman Empire. It was originally a Grafschaft (ruled by a Count) and elevated to duchy status in 1356. It was annexed by France in 1794 and became part of the Roer department. After Napoleon was defeated in 1815, most of its territory became Prussian, with a handful of cities becoming part of the Netherlands.
