Pete's Log: Visit from Munich
Entry #1791, (Life in General)(posted when I was 36 years old.)
On Friday Thomas, Christoph and Christoph's girlfriend Dana came to visit Jamie and me. Thomas stayed at our house. It was his first time to America. Christoph and Dana stayed at a hotel.
I rode the blue line out to meet them at the airport, but their flight was early and they got through customs fast, so we ended up trying to meet in Rosemont instead. But they drove to the Rosemont Metra station, which I didn't know existed. But we found each other.
After dropping stuff off at the hotel and our house, Jamie joined us and we headed to Giordano's for some deep dish pizza. I think it was a good introduction to Chicago food.
Saturday was rainy, so we went on a shopping mission. Costco and Aurora outlet mall were both on the agenda. After the shopping, we hit up the Sweet Spot where we experienced a good sports bar vibe with the Blackhawks game on. We also ordered a bucket of Miller Lites so that the Germans could experience that. It had to be done.
Sunday we went to Yia Yia's Pancake House to experience a proper American breakfast. Afterwards we took the Metra downtown and walked from Union Station to the lakefront, then to Navy Pier, then along the river and to the bean. Our final stop was the Hancock Tower observation floor where we saw the sunset and Thomas took about 500 pictures.
Monday we went to Kuma's Corner for lunch. Christoph and Thomas both said it was the best burger they ever had. I had the Behemoth burger of the month. It was fantastic. We then checked out a few neighborhoods, including Lincoln Square and Wrigleyville before watching the Cubs take on the Pirates at Wrigley Field. Hot dogs and beer and peanuts and cracker jacks were all had. An All-American experience.
Tuesday morning I made pancakes and Jamie made bacon. Then we went to Chinatown, which I had never seen before. We ended the day grilling at our place.
The Germans got up crazy early this morning to fly to New York City. It was a blast having them here.
And they brought me 20 bottles of beer. :)
