Pete's Log: RSS and Fonts
Entry #2353, (Random Crap)(posted when I was 45 years old.)
My RSS feed has reached a point where I deeply enjoy it. There’s still room for more, but lately I’ve gotten better at adding sites to my “previewing” category any time I come across an interesting post. Sometimes they get removed again, but often they stay. What I should probably do at this point is move all the sites that have been in the “previewing” category for some time and properly categorize them.
I love RSS because I go to my RSS feed when I have both time and inclination to read some posts. Lately it’s felt like there’s been a big push among bloggers for email newsletters and I’ve subscribed to a couple, but I end up almost never reading them. Emails arrive anytime and so I mostly see them when either time or inclination to want to read something is lacking. So the email sits there and then when I do want to read something, I rarely think “oh, let me check my inbox!” So please give me RSS instead of email.
So anyway, what got me wanting to praise RSS this morning is a post on making a font out of original Shakespeare prints, which came across my feed from a source I had only recently subscribed to and it absolutely delighted me. My brain immediately wants to download all the software mentioned and obsess about it.
I’m going to resist though, but not before I share one more font thing: KernType, a browser game in which you are asked to manually kern various words in different fonts. I got perfect scores for the first handful of words and then came across one where I had a visceral reaction of hating the font (Rotis semi-serif) and naturally I only scored 80% or so on that one.
Upon further research, I found I don’t mind Rotis Serif or Rotis Sans. But semi-serif just bothers me.
